Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

Little bits of war.

Standalone expansion. Is it but me, or is that something of an oxymoron? How can yous expand something if you lot don't even need to own the original thing in the first identify? It's a particularly pertinent question every bit far as the new Company of Heroes disc is concerned, since this standalone package doesn't actually offer much in the way of new content. It's conspicuously not a sequel, merely then its slim pickings don't practise all that much to expand the game either.

Company of Heroes, of course, was and still is absolutely ace, coaxing top marks from the mercurial Mr Gillen back in 2006. One of the finest RTS games of the terminal few years, information technology rose higher up the herd of similar World State of war 2 strategy titles and showed that veteran Canadian developer Relic wasn't virtually to live upwards to its proper name.

But when you've got a game that's been so universally acclaimed, where practice you take it next? Go along churning out the same stuff and you lot risk familiarity curdling into contempt. Change things too much and you lose any information technology was that fabricated people go gooey to starting time with. Fans of this meatiest of strategy challenges therefore can't help only have shivered a little when designer Chris Degnan told the states that there was "a drive to make a more coincidental, friendly experience" for Tales of Valor. Has the 10/x titan of wartime RTS fallen prey to the dreaded dumbing down?

Sort of.

Tales of Valor'south curious construction makes it difficult to really get a firm grasp on what its purpose is supposed to exist. The core multiplayer component, the flake that made fans gasp and shriek with glee, is much as it'southward always been. The resource management, the base building, the button to capture strategic points and form supply lines through hostile territory. It's still here, information technology's still mortiferous serious, it's still at the mercy of the rather flaky Relic Online organization, but at least they've non replaced annihilation with a quick fourth dimension event. Phew.

Clearly, that's not a skilful idea.

So what, exactly, are you buying in Tales of Valor? "Three new single player campaigns!" shouts the pedagogy manual with boyish enthusiasm, but since each merely features three missions, the word "campaign" seems an overstatement. Tiger Ace follows a single High german Panzer coiffure equally they aid capture a French boondocks. Causeway puts y'all in control of US troops in the hours following D-Day, battling to secure a vital span. Falaise Pocket casts you as a pocket-size Wehrmacht force, sent to aid German language troops surrounded by the Allies.

Each is curt but sweet, with a nice focus on the gritty, basis-level variables of the battlefield, just they're certainly not the sort of meaty challenges fans volition expect. Gameplay has been pared dorsum into something more than akin to Earth in Disharmonize, although at times information technology can feel just as much like a hybrid strategy-action game like Syndicate Wars, as yous're rarely controlling more than four or v units at a time. Earth in Disharmonize and Syndicate Wars are fine inspirations, of course, and there'due south no denying that information technology's exciting to have charge of single unique units and guide them from start to finish through a detail offensive, rather than churning dozens of bearding clones out and lobbing them into action. It's fun, yeah, merely since information technology won't take more than a twenty-four hours to tempest through their slender narratives, they hardly brand for a compelling sales pitch.
